Montgomery County Deputies Arrest Suspect, Recover $30,000 in FDIC Impersonation Scam

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office arrested Witerson Brutus following a sting operation in connection with a phone scam targeting an elderly resident. The suspect posed as an FDIC investigator and convinced the victim to hand over $30,000 in cash, claiming it was needed for “safe keeping.”
The scam unfolded on December 10, 2025, when Brutus instructed the victim to withdraw the funds from her bank and hand them to an Uber driver, purportedly acting as an FBI courier. The next day, when the suspect demanded another $30,000, the victim recognized the scheme and contacted law enforcement.
Montgomery County detectives quickly located and arrested Brutus. During a search of his apartment, the stolen $30,000 was recovered and returned to the victim. Officials warn the public that no government agency will ever request money via courier or over the phone.
Deputies are investigating additional potential victims and urge anyone targeted by similar scams to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 936-538-5900.
