Man Fatally Shot After Pulling Knife on Bystander Outside Girlfriend’s Workplace in Austin

On Thursday evening, May 1, 2025, 37-year-old Marcos Valerio-Rodriguez was fatally shot outside a business located near the Shell station at 2001 E. Riverside Drive, according to the Austin Police Department.

At approximately 6:59 p.m., APD officers and Austin-Travis County EMS responded to a shooting call. Upon arrival, they found Valerio-Rodriguez unresponsive with gunshot wounds to the torso in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to homicide detectives, the investigation revealed that Valerio-Rodriguez had arrived intoxicated at his girlfriend’s workplace, located adjacent to the Shell station. A verbal altercation occurred outside the business before his girlfriend returned inside. Valerio-Rodriguez left, then shortly returned and began banging on the door.

A male bystander intervened, at which point Valerio-Rodriguez pulled a knife on him. The bystander then fired a gun, striking Valerio-Rodriguez. Multiple witnesses confirmed the sequence of events. The bystander remained on scene and cooperated fully with detectives.

No charges have been filed at this time. Police are treating this as an isolated incident, with no ongoing threat to the public.
