Man Dies After Medical Emergency at Galveston County Jail Following Arrest

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — A 51-year-old man died Sunday morning after suffering a medical emergency shortly after being booked into the Galveston County Jail, according to authorities.
Jarrod Holt was arrested around 4:49 a.m. May 3 by the La Marque Police Department on a felony parole board warrant and transported to the jail.
Officials said Holt was evaluated by medical staff from UTMB Health upon arrival. During the evaluation, he admitted to ingesting cocaine. Shortly afterward, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he began vomiting and sweating heavily.
Medical personnel initiated emergency treatment, including CPR, before Holt was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:44 a.m.
In accordance with Texas Jail Standards, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office notified the Texas Rangers and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office, both of which are conducting independent investigations into the in-custody death.
Authorities said the sheriff’s office will not release additional information while the investigation is ongoing. Officials also extended condolences to Holt’s family.
