A hit-and-run crash in north Harris County on Friday morning led deputies to a homicide scene involving a deceased contractor and a man now charged with murder.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the incident began around 11:00 a.m. on May 16, 2025, when patrol deputies responded to multiple calls near the 4000 block of Tim Allen Court, close to W. Richey and Veterans Memorial.

Callers reported a vehicle crash involving a fleeing driver. One of those calls came from the suspect himself—later identified as the driver in the hit-and-run—who claimed he had just fled a residence after discovering a dead body.

The man told authorities he had been offered money by another man to help move furniture. Upon arriving at the residence, he said he discovered a deceased person in one of the boxes he was instructed to carry. The man fled the house in the suspect’s truck, with the homeowner in the bed of the vehicle.

As he drove away, the man struck another vehicle. The man riding in the bed of the truck fled on foot but was later detained by responding deputies.

Homicide detectives identified the deceased as a contractor who had been working at the residence. The homeowner, 35-year-old Steven Eberly (DOB 11/04/1988), has been charged with Murder and booked into the county jail following a brief hospital stay.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending autopsy results and notification of next-of-kin. The exact cause and manner of death remain under investigation.
