Harris County Deputies Uncover Stolen Car and Fraudulent IDs During Traffic Stop

On Saturday, January 25, 2025, Harris County Precinct 2 Constable Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for failing to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle and displaying a canceled Texas license plate.
During the stop, deputies identified the driver as 42-year-old Kennis Wayne Green. Deputies noted an odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle and detained Green and two other occupants.

Upon inspection, deputies compared the vehicle identification number (VIN) associated with the license plate and the VIN on the vehicle, finding that they did not match. A check of the VIN through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) revealed the vehicle was reported stolen by the Houston Police Department. Green informed deputies he had rented the vehicle from a “dope fiend” for an undisclosed amount. He was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
One passenger, 39-year-old Gerardo Perez, initially provided deputies with his younger brother’s name. However, deputies used the department’s mobile identification fingerprint system (AFIS) to confirm his identity. Perez was found to have an open warrant for DWI in Colorado.
The other passenger, 47-year-old Yakeyma Smith, was discovered in possession of multiple passports, driver’s licenses, and U.S. citizenship cards. Smith was arrested and charged with fraudulent possession of identification documents.
All three individuals were charged and transported to the Harris County Jail without incident.
