Fatal Shooting Occurs at Brownsville Public Library, Suspect Apprehended
On Saturday, May 11, 2024, at approximately 12:04 pm, Brownsville Police Patrol Officers rushed to the Brownsville Public Library on Central Blvd after reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim, identified as 71-year-old Vahid Khaledi, unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head.
The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Humberto Paz, was apprehended at the scene. Paz was arraigned the following Sunday morning and charged with Murder (1st Degree Felony) and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (2nd Degree Felony). He was issued a $3,250,000 bond.
Initial investigations suggest the incident stemmed from a verbal altercation between Khaledi and Paz, both of whom were present at the library. However, further details surrounding the altercation remain under investigation.
Despite the tragedy, the Brownsville Police Department emphasized their commitment to community safety. They commended the swift and orderly response of library staff and patrol officers in evacuating everyone from the scene safely.
The Brownsville Public Library Main Branch will remain closed until further notice.
