Bryan Man Receives 20-Year Sentence for Knife Attack on Convenience Store Clerk
Jonathan Doyel

Bryan, TX – Jonathan Doyel, 30, was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon by a Brazos County jury on December 9, 2025, and sentenced to the maximum 20 years in prison.

The incident occurred on January 21, 2024, at a convenience store on Old College Road. Doyel attempted to purchase a case of beer, but the store clerk, citing Doyel’s prior disruptive behavior, refused service. Angered, Doyel left and slashed the victim’s car tire. Later that evening, as the victim was changing the tire in the store’s parking lot, Doyel attacked from behind with a steak knife, stabbing the victim in the left side of his back and puncturing a lung. The victim was able to subdue Doyel after a struggle.

Bystanders called 911, and Bryan police officers, along with paramedics from the Bryan Fire Department, responded. The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for life-threatening injuries. Surveillance video of the assault was collected, and Doyel was arrested at the scene.

During the sentencing phase, the jury heard that Doyel had prior convictions for two DWIs and an assault causing bodily injury.

Assistant District Attorneys Kevin Capps and Caleb Beacham, Investigator Tiffany Graves, and Victim Assistance Coordinator Shae Cooks represented the State. They praised the jury’s decision, noting, “This was a senseless and terrifying act of life-threatening violence against an innocent victim who had to fight to save his own life. We thank the jury for protecting our community to the maximum degree permitted by law.”

The Bryan Police Department, Bryan Fire Department, and medical personnel were commended for their swift response and care for the victim.
