Austin Police Release Details and Video in Officer-Involved Shooting After Stolen Vehicle Pursuit

The Austin Police Department (APD) has released preliminary details and relevant audio and video footage concerning an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at approximately 11:16 p.m., in the intersection of Research Boulevard SVRD NB and North Lamar Boulevard.
The incident began when APD officers attempted to stop a reported stolen vehicle. The suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Devin Guevara, evaded officers, initiating a brief pursuit during which the vehicle traveled at high speeds and ran through red lights. At approximately 11:21 p.m., Guevara’s vehicle collided with a cement pillar. Despite the collision, the suspect continued to evade.
A short time later, Guevara’s vehicle struck an uninvolved vehicle at the intersection of Research Boulevard SVRD NB and North Lamar Boulevard, causing the suspect vehicle to spin and face oncoming traffic. As officers began to exit their patrol vehicles, Guevara reportedly opened fire on them. Four officers—Joseph Duesler, Kai Finch, Martin Vela, and Vincent Nguyen—returned fire, striking Guevara in the clavicle. No officers were struck by gunfire.
After the exchange of gunfire, officers observed Guevara moving inside the vehicle and instructed him to put his hands up and exit. Guevara complied, exiting through the driver’s side window. He was then detained and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Guevara was subsequently booked into the Travis County Jail on Sunday, June 1, 2025, facing charges including three counts of Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant (1st Degree Felony), Evading Motor Vehicle (3rd Degree Felony), and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (State Jail Felony).
The driver of the uninvolved vehicle struck by Guevara’s car received minor injuries and was treated and released. One officer also sustained minor injuries during the incident and was treated and released. No other individuals were harmed.
Per APD protocol, the four officers who discharged their firearms have been placed on paid administrative leave. APD will conduct two concurrent investigations: a criminal investigation led by the APD Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, and an administrative investigation by the APD Internal Affairs Unit with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight (OPO).
APD emphasized its commitment to transparency, stating that the released materials, including police radio traffic audio, dash camera footage from multiple officers, and still photos, have been reviewed by the Travis County District Attorney’s Office and OPO. The footage, particularly the in-car dash camera recordings, is considered the most comprehensive understanding of the incident, though viewers are advised of graphic content and language.
All of the released materials are available on the Department’s YouTube and other social media platforms. The link to the materials is below.
