Man Fatally Shot During Attempted Robbery at North Austin Apartment Garage

On Friday, December 13, 2024, at approximately 1:41 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a shooting call at Saint David’s North Austin Medical Center, located at 12221 North Mopac Expressway. A security guard at the hospital reported that a man, later identified as Carlos Sotelo, had arrived by private vehicle with a single gunshot wound.
APD officers identified and interviewed the driver of the vehicle who transported Mr. Sotelo to the hospital. Investigators determined the shooting occurred earlier in the parking garage of the Griffis Apartments at 3210 Esperanza Crossing. According to the investigation, multiple suspects approached Mr. Sotelo and other occupants in their vehicle and attempted to rob them at gunpoint. As the driver attempted to flee, the suspects fired into the vehicle, striking Mr. Sotelo.
Mr. Sotelo was later pronounced deceased at 10:28 a.m. on Saturday, December 14. Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists are continuing to investigate the incident.
