Louisiana Man Sentenced to Life for Fatal Shooting During Domestic Dispute

Kentrell Obrien Brumfield, 36, has been sentenced to life in prison for a deadly attack on his ex-girlfriend and her neighbor during a dinner gathering, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Wednesday.

The incident occurred on June 29, 2022, in north Harris County, Texas. Brumfield, originally from Farmerville, Louisiana, forcibly entered his ex-girlfriend’s apartment while she was having dinner with her neighbor, Brittani Simmons, a 23-year-old mother.

Brumfield opened fire, fatally shooting Simmons and seriously injuring his ex-girlfriend before fleeing the scene. He was apprehended the following day in Mississippi after a pursuit, during which he fired shots at law enforcement officers. Fortunately, no officers were harmed during the arrest.

After a swift trial that lasted four days, a Harris County jury deliberated for only 16 minutes before finding Brumfield guilty of murder. On Wednesday, a judge sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Assistant District Attorney Lara Hogue, along with ADA John Hyde, prosecuted the case. Hogue highlighted Brumfield’s history of violence, including previous convictions for domestic violence and home invasion in Louisiana.

“This was such a senseless crime—neither of these women deserved to be shot—Brittani was just an innocent neighbor who was over for dinner,” said Hogue. “This was the right result because this defendant has shown that he is not just a danger to our community but to any community he is in.”
