El Paso Police Charge Two Men With False Stolen Vehicle Reports

EL PASO, Texas – The El Paso Police Department Auto Theft Task Force is warning residents that filing a false police report is a crime. The warning follows two separate investigations in which men reported their Nissan trucks and SUVs stolen and later admitted they were not truthful, police said.
Police identified the two men as 64-year-old Jesus Armando Morales and 23-year-old Diego Ibrahim Vaquera. Each faces a charge of false report or statement to an officer, with bond set at $5,000.
Nissan Rogue reported stolen from driveway
On October 25, Morales reported his Nissan Rogue stolen from his driveway, according to the department. Police said he gave conflicting information during the report.
Officers later found the vehicle. Morales then disclosed that he had not been truthful with the officer, police said. The case is listed under incident number 26-298120.
Nissan Titan found abandoned on Dyer Street
Vaquera reported his 2007 Nissan Titan stolen on October 7, police said. On October 13, Auto Theft Task Force officers found the truck abandoned on Dyer Street.
Vaquera later admitted he filed a false report, according to police. That case is listed under incident number 26-280209.
Police warning
The task force said every reported vehicle theft gets a thorough investigation. Police said people who submit false claims will face criminal prosecution and charges.
The department described filing a false police report as an illegal offense. Both men face charges, which are accusations, and the release did not say whether either has entered a plea.
