Wichita Falls City Manager Selects Jonathan Lindsey as Next Police Chief
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Wichita Falls City Manager Jeff Jenkins has selected Captain Jonathan Lindsey to serve as the designee for the city’s next chief of police, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Wichita Falls Police Department.
If confirmed by the Wichita Falls City Council, Lindsey will become the department’s 23rd police chief. The council is scheduled to consider his appointment during its Aug. 18 meeting.
Lindsey brings 25 years of experience with the Wichita Falls Police Department, where he began his law enforcement career in 2001. During that time, he has served in numerous assignments, including Patrol, Crimes Against Persons, Crimes Against Property, Financial Crimes, the Gang Task Force, Tactical Unit, SWAT Team and the Traffic Unit’s Motorcycle Division.
He was promoted to sergeant in 2016, serving in both Patrol and the Tactical Unit before advancing to lieutenant in 2019. As a lieutenant, he supervised Patrol and the Special Operations Section. Lindsey was promoted to captain in 2024 and currently oversees the Investigative Operations Division, which includes the Criminal Investigations Section and the Special Operations Section.
Lindsey holds a Certificate of Achievement in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia and is expected to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration in 2027. Earlier this year, he graduated from the FBI National Academy, Class No. 297, and is currently completing the Leadership Command College through the Texas Law Enforcement Management Institute.
Throughout his career, Lindsey has received numerous honors, including Rookie of the Year, Supervisor of the Year in 2018, 2020 and 2021, the Certificate of Civic Achievement, the Certificate of Police Excellence, the Life Saving Award and several other commendations.
He is also an active member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Texas Police Chiefs Association and the FBI National Academy Associates.
“Captain Lindsey has demonstrated a deep commitment to the Wichita Falls community, exceptional leadership within the department, and a clear vision for the future of policing in our city,” Jenkins said. “His experience, professionalism, and dedication to public service make him well prepared to lead the Wichita Falls Police Department into its next chapter.”
Mayor Tim Short praised the selection process, saying city staff and the search committee listened carefully to residents through stakeholder meetings and a community survey.
“I am so proud of the staff and search committee for their hard and diligent work in this search,” Short said. “They listened to the community and have taken to heart what was said in stakeholder meetings and a survey. We are excited with the direction our Police Department will be going as we work forward.”
Wichita County District Attorney John Gillespie, who has worked with Lindsey for more than two decades, also voiced his support.
“I have worked closely with Captain Lindsey for over 20 years. He is a great leader, a man of integrity, and has a tremendous vision for leading the WFPD. I am excited to work with the new Chief in protecting Wichita Falls,” Gillespie said.
If confirmed by the City Council, Lindsey will succeed the department’s current leadership and assume responsibility for leading the Wichita Falls Police Department into its next chapter.
