Houston Man Charged With Capital Murder in Death of 90-Year-Old Assault Victim

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of a 90-year-old man who succumbed to injuries weeks after a violent assault in the city’s East End.

Anthony Cerda, 34, has been charged with Capital Murder in the 232nd District Court, according to the Houston Police Department.

The victim was identified as Francisco Chura, 90.

Police said officers responded to a report of an assault at approximately 9 a.m. on Aug. 20, 2025, in the 7800 block of Canal Street.

When officers arrived, they found Chura suffering from multiple blunt-force trauma injuries.

Houston Fire Department paramedics transported Chura to a local hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he died from his injuries on Sept. 7, 2025.

HPD Homicide Division investigators continued working the case and ultimately identified Cerda as the suspect.

On June 12, 2026, officers assigned to the Houston Police Department Eastside Division Gang Unit located and arrested Cerda.

He was subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail on the capital murder charge.

Police have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the assault or a possible motive.

The investigation remains ongoing.
