HOUSTON — Charges were filed against three suspects following a home invasion that left a Houston police officer wounded in September 2024.

The shooting occurred around 9:50 a.m. on September 17, 2024, in the 7100 block of Alderney Drive, according to the Houston Police Department.

Suspects and Charges

Authorities identified the suspects as:

  • Raymond Perez, 35 — charged with Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant, Aggravated Robbery with a Deadly Weapon, and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.
  • Michael Perez, 38 — charged with Aggravated Robbery with a Deadly Weapon.
  • Brian A. Garcia Chavez, 18 — charged with Aggravated Robbery with a Deadly Weapon.

All charges were filed in the 230th State District Court.

Officer Shot During Confrontation

HPD patrol officers responded to a reported home invasion in progress. When officers arrived, they encountered two suspects inside the residence.

As officers were taking Michael Perez into custody, another suspect emerged from a back room and opened fire on officers. Officer Scott Durfee, assigned to the Northwest Patrol Division, was struck in the leg but returned fire. The suspect was not hit and fled out the back door.

Houston Fire Department paramedics transported Officer Durfee to Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center, where he was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and later released. Durfee had been sworn in as an HPD officer in January 2016.

Suspects Captured

Investigators later located Raymond Perez, identified as the shooter, about a block away and arrested him without incident.

A third suspect, Brian Garcia Chavez, who allegedly waited in a getaway vehicle, was located several hours later in the 5800 block of Hollister Road and taken into custody by HPD SWAT officers.

Ongoing Review

As standard procedure in officer-involved shootings within Houston city limits, the case was reviewed by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
