Houston Woman Charged With Intoxication Manslaughter After Fiery Freeway Crash Kills Passenger

HOUSTON, Texas. A 20-year-old woman has been charged with intoxication manslaughter after a fiery crash on the Southwest Freeway claimed the life of a passenger early Saturday morning, according to the Houston Police Department.

Niya Esther Maman is charged with Intoxication Manslaughter with a Vehicle in the 180th State District Court.

The victim was identified as 26-year-old Adriana Elizabeth Guerrero Rubio.

According to investigators, the crash occurred at about 1:45 a.m. on July 19 in the 6000 block of the Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59).

Police said a blue Acura RSX was traveling northbound when it lost its front bumper. The driver pulled onto the left shoulder, exited the vehicle and attempted to retrieve the bumper from the roadway while Guerrero Rubio remained inside the Acura.

As the driver was outside the vehicle, a gray Ford Mustang traveling northbound struck the Acura after grazing the Acura’s driver.

The collision caused both vehicles to catch fire.

Houston Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and pronounced Guerrero Rubio dead inside the Acura. The 27-year-old Acura driver was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators determined that Maman, the driver of the Ford Mustang, was impaired at the time of the crash. She was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with Intoxication Manslaughter with a Vehicle.
