Amarillo Jury Sends Gunman to Prison for 60 Years in 2024 Parking Lot Murder; Accomplice Gets 25

AMARILLO, Texas — A deadly parking lot fight that unfolded in early 2024 has now resulted in lengthy prison sentences for two young men.
In January 2024, a fight broke out near the intersection of Highland Street and Amarillo Boulevard. During the altercation, a car carrying four individuals who knew those involved pulled up to the scene. The driver was identified as Jorge Cabello.
Cabello and passenger Isaac Botello exited the vehicle and approached the group. According to evidence presented in court, Botello fired at least five shots, striking brothers Jesus Pina and Everardo Leal.
Leal was shot once in the chest and died at the scene. Pina was shot multiple times but survived and was able to leave the area and alert law enforcement.
Botello and Cabello fled the scene in the vehicle, with Cabello driving.
In January 2026, Botello stood trial in the 181st District Court for the murder of Leal. A jury convicted him of murder and sentenced him to 60 years in prison.
Cabello was charged with murder as a party for driving Botello to and from the scene. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The 47th District Attorney’s Office thanked the Homicide Unit of the Amarillo Police Department for its investigation, as well as the witnesses who came forward and testified during the trial.
Prosecutors also expressed gratitude to Jesus Pina and his family for their commitment to seeking justice for Leal.
District Attorney Jason Herring said the verdict sends a clear message.
“The jury’s verdict sends a strong message that violence and the loss of life will be punished severely,” Herring said. “The safety of our community and protecting life are among our highest priorities.”
Officials noted the tragedy of the case, pointing out that everyone involved, both victims and defendants, were young, underscoring the devastating and lasting consequences of violence.
