Socorro Man Arrested on Murder Charge for Central El Paso Stabbing

EL PASO, TX – The El Paso Police Department has arrested Oscar Octavio Ortiz, 23, of Socorro, on a Murder charge in connection with the stabbing death of a Central El Paso man.
On July 29, 2025, at approximately 8:30 p.m., police responded to a report of an aggravated assault in progress at 201 E. Ninth. Upon arrival, officers found 46-year-old Rigoberto Cortes lying in the street with an apparent stab wound. Cortes was transported to a local hospital but later died from his injuries.
The Crimes Against Persons unit took over the investigation and identified Ortiz as the suspect who had stabbed Cortes.
Ortiz was apprehended on July 31 at the Paso Del Norte port of entry and was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility. His bond was set at $1,000,000 by Judge Ray Duke.
