AUSTIN, Texas — Three suspects, including a 17-year-old, are in custody after investigators linked them to a violent series of shootings, stolen vehicles, and other crimes that unfolded across Austin over two days, according to the Austin Police Department.

Police identified one suspect as 17-year-old Cristian Fajardo Mondragon. The names of the other two suspects, ages 15 and 16, were withheld because they are juveniles under Texas law.

Authorities said charges under review include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, deadly conduct, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest, theft of a firearm, and additional offenses. Investigators noted more charges could be filed as evidence continues to be analyzed.

According to APD, the shootings occurred between May 16 and May 17, 2026, and investigators believe some incidents were targeted while others appeared random. Detectives said there is no ongoing threat to the public connected to the suspects.

The investigation began around 11:30 a.m. May 16 after officers received a report of a stolen firearm from a business at 321 W. Ben White Boulevard. Surveillance video identified the suspect vehicle as a dark-colored Hyundai Sonata, which investigators later discovered had itself been stolen from the Social Apartments.

The first confirmed shooting occurred around 3:58 p.m. at a trailer residence on Yucca Drive, where officers found shell casings and bullet damage but no injuries.

About 30 minutes later, officers responded to the Whisper Hollow Apartments after gunfire struck multiple vehicles and an occupied apartment unit where adults and children were inside. No one was injured.

Investigators said another shooting occurred at an apartment complex on Montopolis Drive where suspects exited a vehicle and fired through the door of a third-floor apartment before fleeing in a black sedan.

Police later connected additional shootings at homes and businesses throughout the evening, including incidents on Cypress Bend and Decker Lane.

At approximately 8:49 p.m., suspects allegedly fired into Austin Fire Station 26 on Wentworth Drive while firefighters were inside. Bullets struck emergency vehicles and equipment, though no firefighters were injured.

Minutes later, another shooting on Purple Sage Drive left one victim with minor injuries after bullets shattered a parked vehicle’s windshield while the person was inside.

On May 17, the violence escalated further.

At about 8:46 a.m., officers responded to Janes Ranch Road where a victim had been shot in the back and stomach. Witnesses described a dark-colored sedan fleeing the area.

Later that morning, police located one of the stolen Hyundai vehicles near South First Street and Ben White Boulevard, but the vehicle fled before officers could stop it.

Investigators also recovered additional stolen vehicles tied to the suspects throughout southeast Austin.

At approximately 10:46 a.m., another shooting targeted Austin Fire Station 32 on Monticello Road. Investigators said suspects in a gold-colored sedan fired into the station while garage doors were open, striking both the building and an Austin Fire Department vehicle.

Authorities said the suspects later stole a white Kia Optima from the South Interstate 35 service road area and used it in multiple shootings Sunday afternoon.

Around 1:44 p.m., two people were shot during a drive-by shooting on Burton Drive involving the white Kia. Shortly afterward, additional shootings were reported on Fairway Street and Burleson Road.

At approximately 2:29 p.m., another victim suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds on Dionda Lane and was transported to a trauma center. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the white Kia approaching the victim before gunfire erupted.

The suspects were ultimately captured around 3:23 p.m. after Manor Police Department officers located the stolen Kia near FM 973 following a regional BOLO alert.

Police said the suspects fled during a pursuit before driving into a field and abandoning the vehicle. One suspect was immediately captured, while the remaining two were arrested after an extensive search involving K-9 units, helicopters, SWAT personnel, and numerous law enforcement agencies.

In total, investigators said:

  • Four people were struck by gunfire
  • One victim remains hospitalized with critical injuries
  • Three others suffered non-life-threatening injuries
  • Five vehicles were hit by gunfire
  • Four homes were struck
  • Two Austin fire stations were targeted
  • Three fire department vehicles were damaged
  • At least five vehicles were stolen
  • One firearm was stolen

Authorities credited the arrests to coordinated intelligence sharing, surveillance footage, ballistic evidence, license plate reader technology, witness statements, and assistance from multiple local, state, and federal agencies.

The investigation remains ongoing.
