17-Year-Old Arrested for Murder After Shooting Victim in Brownsville
On Saturday, August 10, 2024, Cameron County Sheriff Deputies responded to the intersection of Katarina Avenue and Florencia Avenue in Brownsville, Texas, following a report of a male subject who had been shot multiple times. Upon arrival, deputies located the 911 caller, who informed them that the victim had been shot in the neck. Emergency Medical Services arrived and attempted to provide medical attention, but the victim did not survive.
A murder investigation was launched, and Cameron County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrived at the scene. They learned that the victim had been involved in a narcotics deal when the suspect demanded money and drugs. The victim attempted to calm the suspect but was shot in the back.
On Sunday, August 11, 2024, investigators canvassed the neighborhood and obtained video surveillance footage of the suspect leaving the scene. The suspect was identified as 17-year-old Angel Sanchez, a resident of the area. Investigators approached Sanchez’s residence and observed him setting fire to clothing. Sanchez was detained, and the clothing was secured as evidence.
During an interview, Sanchez confessed to shooting the victim and burning the clothing he wore during the incident to impede the investigation. He was arrested and transported to the Carrizales Rucker Detention Center, where he awaits arraignment. Sanchez is charged with Murder under Texas Penal Code 19.02(c), a 1st Degree Felony, and Tampering with or Fabricating Physical Evidence under Texas Penal Code 37.09, a 3rd Degree Felony.
