HOUSTON, Texas — A third suspect has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred during an apparent home invasion in 2022, according to Houston police.

Anthony Deshone Smith, 25, has been charged with capital murder in the 178th Criminal District Court. Officials said Smith is currently in federal custody and will be extradited to Harris County upon his release.

The charge stems from the December 10, 2022, shooting death of 34-year-old James Blanton at a residence on Safeguard Street. Investigators said Blanton was in his driveway around 12:15 a.m. when he encountered two masked, armed suspects attempting to enter his home.

Authorities said Blanton confronted the suspects and a struggle ensued before he was shot. The suspects fled the scene on foot and may have entered a waiting vehicle.

Police previously identified Carl Michael McCloud Jr., 24, as the alleged driver of the vehicle. He was arrested on December 14, 2022, and charged with capital murder. A second suspect, Derrick Wayne Castille, 28, was later identified, arrested and charged in connection with the case.

Detectives said Smith was identified as a third suspect during the ongoing investigation and formally charged April 28, 2026.

The case remains under investigation.
