Suspect Shoots Himself After 100 MPH Chase in Galveston County
Roger Turner

LA PORTE, Texas – A high-speed pursuit in Galveston County ended with a suspect shooting himself early Friday morning.

On March 20, 2026, at approximately 12:20 a.m., deputies with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle traveling northbound on State Highway 146 near State Highway 96 for a non-functioning brake light.

The driver refused to stop, leading deputies on a pursuit that reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. The chase continued to the McCabe Road exit in La Porte.

Authorities said the vehicle entered a business parking lot in the 1900 block of State Highway 146, where the driver exited the vehicle while it was still moving. As he got out, the driver pulled a handgun and shot himself in the head.

The driver was identified as 47-year-old Roger Turner of La Porte. He was transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries and is not expected to survive.

Investigators later determined Turner had an active warrant out of Harris County for delivery of a controlled substance. A search of his vehicle also led to the discovery of additional narcotics, including methamphetamine.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Unit are investigating the incident, which is being treated as a suicide.

The case remains active.
