Fernando Chacon-Perez

Charges have been filed against a suspect in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on the Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) service road on Tuesday, November 7, at approximately 11:40 p.m.

The suspect, identified as Fernando Jose Chacon Perez, 23, is facing charges of intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault in the 176th State District Court. The identity of the deceased male victim has yet to be officially confirmed by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

According to authorities, Chacon Perez was driving a silver Mazda M3S southbound on the service road in the vicinity of 9100 Gulf Freeway. He proceeded to take the entrance ramp onto the Gulf Freeway but lost control of the vehicle. The Mazda veered off the ramp and then re-entered the service road, ultimately colliding with a tree, a utility pole, and a utility box.

Tragically, the rear seat passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics. Meanwhile, a male front seat passenger, aged 18, was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. Chacon Perez himself sustained minor injuries in the crash and was also taken to a nearby hospital.

Following an assessment, Chacon Perez was found to be impaired, leading to his subsequent arrest and charges related to the incident. After his discharge from the hospital, he was booked into the Harris County Jail to await legal proceedings.
