Suspect Arrested After Standoff with Abilene SWAT, Damaging Armored Vehicle

ABILENE, TX – A three-hour standoff with police ended peacefully Wednesday evening when a suspect, Austin Heuermann, 31, surrendered after allegedly firing shots at officers. Heuermann is now facing multiple charges, including 11 counts of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant. No officers or individuals were injured during the incident.

The situation began around 5:00 p.m. in the 2200 block of Bel Air Street when members of the Abilene Police Narcotics Unit were serving an arrest warrant for Heuermann. As agents were evacuating other people from the residence, a shot was fired from inside the home, believed to have come from the suspect.

After the Abilene Police SWAT team was called to the scene, a second shot was fired at approximately 5:56 p.m., damaging the windshield of the SWAT team’s armored vehicle.

Following more than two hours of negotiations by the Abilene Police Crisis Negotiations Team, Heuermann surrendered at approximately 8:20 p.m. and was taken into custody without incident.

Heuermann has been charged with:

  • 11 counts of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant (First-Degree Felony)
  • Possession of Methamphetamine (Second-Degree Felony)
  • Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon (Third-Degree Felony)
  • Evading Arrest/Detention with a Vehicle (Third-Degree Felony)
