Son Sentenced to Life for Severe Elder Neglect Resulting in Mother’s Death
In a harrowing case of elder neglect, 75-year-old Jean Hartzel was found unresponsive in her home on February 21, 2020, prompting a response from Port Arthur Police officers. Upon arrival, Port Arthur Fire personnel noted severe neglect evident in the residence. Investigations revealed that Jean had been confined to a bed for months without proper care.
Her son, Alan Hartzel, who resided with her, was identified as the sole caregiver. Alan Hartzel was questioned and subsequently arrested on the same day for Injury to an Elderly, a first-degree felony.
First responders described the case as one of the worst instances of neglect they had encountered. Despite the victim’s passing, officers, detectives, and crime scene technicians meticulously investigated the residence, gathering evidence crucial to securing a conviction.
The trial commenced on Monday, resulting in Alan Hartzel’s guilty verdict yesterday. On May 3, 2024, the jury sentenced him to life in prison.
