Service Dog Shot Protecting Owner During Violent Dog Attack in North Houston

HOUSTON — Deputies with Constable Mark Herman’s Office are searching for a suspect after a disturbance involving a weapon Tuesday morning at an apartment complex in far north Houston.

Authorities said deputies responded May 19, 2026, to the 14300 block of Ella Boulevard at the Venti Apartments after a complainant reported being attacked by a black pit bull while walking with their service dog.

According to investigators, the complainant said their service dog intervened and protected them during the attack.

During the confrontation, deputies said the other dog’s owner allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired shots toward the service dog.

Officials said the suspect fled and may still be in the area.

Emergency medical personnel were requested to evaluate the complainant as a precaution. Authorities said the service dog was transported to a local veterinary hospital for evaluation.

The investigation remains ongoing.
