San Angelo Teen in Custody After Attempting to Evade Officers During Traffic Stop
On November 1, 2023, in the Southside of San Angelo, a nineteen-year-old man named Ivan Lopez was taken into custody by law enforcement officers after attempting to evade them on foot following a traffic stop.
An officer with the San Angelo Police Department’s Anti-Crime Unit spotted Lopez operating a white Dodge Charger in the vicinity of the “River Ranch Apartments.” The officers were aware that Lopez had active warrants for his arrest, prompting them to initiate a traffic stop on Lopez’s vehicle, which took place in the 1700 block of Knickerbocker Road.
Upon the traffic stop, Lopez was seen exiting the vehicle in an attempt to flee on foot. Law enforcement officers quickly gave chase, and during the pursuit, they observed Lopez discarding an unknown item over a fence in the 3600 block of S. Jackson. A short distance later, responding officers managed to apprehend and take Lopez into custody.
A subsequent search of the area revealed that the item thrown over the fence by Lopez was a stolen handgun. It was also discovered that this handgun had been modified to be capable of automatic fire. In addition to the firearm, Lopez was found in possession of a small quantity of marijuana and suspected “THC” vape pens.
Ivan Lopez now faces multiple charges in relation to this incident, including the following:
- Multiple County Warrants
- Possession of Marijuana (less than 2 ounces)
- Evading Arrest/Detention on Foot
- Unlawful Carry of a Weapon
