San Angelo Police Apprehend Suspect After Vehicle Pursuit in Southeast Side

In San Angelo, on the evening of Saturday, October 14, 2023, a male suspect was apprehended after a vehicle pursuit in the Southeast part of the city. Samuel Sutton, a 40-year-old, now faces multiple felony charges in connection with this incident.

The sequence of events unfolded when a patrol officer from the San Angelo Police Department (SAPD) attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a Dodge Ram pickup truck. The pickup had narrowly avoided a collision with the officer’s patrol unit near the intersection of State Street and Paint Rock Road. The driver of the Dodge Ram, however, failed to comply with the officer’s instructions and instead sped away, initiating a nearly 10-minute vehicle pursuit within the Southeast area of San Angelo.

During the chase, an officer from the SAPD’s Anti-Crime Unit managed to strategically position themselves in front of the fleeing suspect and successfully deployed “Stop Sticks” in the path of the suspect’s vehicle. As the suspect’s vehicle drove over the “Stop Sticks,” the front left tire deflated, causing the pursuit to come to a safe conclusion near the intersection of Preusser and Emerick Street.

Following the successful deployment of the “Stop Sticks,” Samuel Sutton was taken into custody. He is now facing the following charges:

  • Evading Arrest/Detention with a Motor Vehicle.
  • Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
  • Parole Violation Warrant.
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1 >= 1G < 4G.
  • Possession of Marijuana < 2oz.

Fortunately, there was no damage reported to city or private property during the course of this pursuit.
