Pedestrian Fatality in El Paso Results from Crossing Outside Crosswalk
On November 22, 2024, at approximately 5:29 p.m., the Special Traffic Investigations unit responded to a pedestrian crash in the 5300 block of N. Mesa. Preliminary information indicates that 47-year-old Maria Leonor Cardoza, a resident of West El Paso, was traveling northwest when 34-year-old Ray James Robert, the pedestrian, crossed N. Mesa at a location other than a designated crosswalk.
Cardoza was unable to avoid the pedestrian and struck him in the roadway. She remained at the scene uninjured. Robert was transported to a local hospital by fire medical services.
On November 30, 2024, the Medical Examiner’s Office notified investigators that Robert had died as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash. The incident highlights the risks associated with crossing at points other than crosswalks.
This marks the 63rd traffic fatality of 2024 in El Paso, compared to 75 fatalities at the same time last year.
