Officer-Involved Shooting in West Lubbock Leaves One Dead

The Lubbock Police Department is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in West Lubbock on September 26, 2023, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old man, identified as Homero Carrillo.

According to official reports, the incident unfolded at approximately 12:28 pm in the 6300 block of 31st Street when Lubbock Police received a call regarding a located stolen vehicle. Responding to the call was an 18-year veteran of the Lubbock Police Department, a Patrol Officer.

During the initial stages of the investigation, it was determined that the officer had located the stolen vehicle in the vicinity of the reported incident. Upon arrival at the scene, Carrillo, the driver of the stolen vehicle, exited the driver’s side and attempted to flee on foot.

In an effort to apprehend Carrillo, the officer deployed his TASER, but the attempt proved unsuccessful. Carrillo then produced a firearm, prompting the officer to discharge multiple rounds from his duty weapon, striking Carrillo.

Simultaneously, a passenger in the stolen vehicle, identified as 24-year-old Danielle Manzanares, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Law enforcement officers from another unit located and detained Manzanares shortly thereafter, in the 6000 block of 29th Street.

Homero Carrillo was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS personnel. Danielle Manzanares, on the other hand, was taken into custody and faces charges of Evading on Foot, Possession of Marijuana, and an unrelated warrant. She has since been transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center.

Following the incident, multiple units within the Lubbock Police Department were mobilized to respond. These units include the Metro Unit, the Forensic Investigations Unit, the Major Crash Investigations Unit, and the Office of Professional Standards. They are actively processing the scene for evidence.

The officer involved in the shooting was unharmed and has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard Lubbock Police Department policy. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
