Off-Duty Officer Faces Resistance in Walmart Shoplifting Turned Robbery; Suspect Apprehended

In an incident at Walmart located at 9598 Rowlette Rd. in the afternoon of December 31, 2023, Patrol Deputies from Constable Jerry Garcia’s Office responded to assist an off-duty police officer dealing with a shoplifting case.

The officer, employed by a local police department, was informed by Walmart staff about an adult female shoplifter. Upon observing the suspect making no purchase attempt, the officer tried to detain her, but encountered resistance.

The female suspect resisted surrendering the stolen items, even attempting to assault the officer in her escape. Nearby patrolling deputies responded to the scene, successfully taking the suspect, identified as Tyra Brown, into custody.

Subsequent investigation by Pct. 2 Deputies revealed that the incident was classified as an act of robbery. Tyra Brown has been charged and transported to the Harris County Jail.
