Odessa Police In-Custody Death Ruled Caused by Cocaine-Induced Cardiac Arrhythmia

The Odessa Police Department has released the findings from an autopsy in an in-custody death that occurred on October 3, 2025. The medical examination determined the cause of death was cardiac arrhythmia resulting from cocaine use.

The incident began at approximately 4:58 p.m. when officers responded to the intersection of University and Santa Monica after a report of an unknown problem. Officers encountered a male subject lying in the roadway exhibiting erratic behavior. He was detained for safety reasons and observed to be experiencing a medical emergency.

Odessa Fire and Rescue transported the man to Medical Center Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased shortly afterward.

Following the incident, the Texas Rangers were notified and assisted with the investigation, which was classified as an in-custody death. All officers involved were placed on administrative leave during the review and have now returned to duty.

The Odessa Police Department confirmed that all officers are safe and without injury. Any additional inquiries regarding the investigation should be directed to the Texas Rangers.
