Murder-Suicide Incident in Fort Bend County; Four Deceased Including 8-year-old

On Saturday, January 13th, 2024, at approximately 6:52 am, Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a distressing incident in the 17000 block of Cory Cornel Lane in Richmond, Fort Bend County, Texas. The response was prompted by reports of a shooting related to a domestic dispute.

Upon arrival, Sheriff’s Deputies discovered a heartbreaking scene – a murder-suicide involving five family members. The call for help was made by a juvenile and the grandmother present in the residence. They informed the dispatch center that a family member had shot and killed several relatives.

The suspect, identified as Alrick “Shawn” Alphanso Barrett, 46, took the lives of his estranged wife, 44, brother-in-law, 43, sister-in-law, 46, and 8-year-old niece-in-law. The suspect then turned the weapon on himself, ending his own life.

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Deputies found two surviving children who had managed to hide during the shooting, along with one adult who escaped unharmed. All the victims and the suspect were transported to the Fort Bend County Medical Examiner’s Office for postmortem examination, with results pending.

Sheriff Eric Fagan addressed the community, stating, “Our community stands united against such acts, and we are committed to providing support and resources to victims during these challenging times.” He extended his deepest sympathies to the affected family and those impacted by domestic violence.

The investigation is ongoing.
