Man Shot by Odessa Police After Charging at Officers with Hammer

A man was shot by police Thursday morning after charging at officers with a hammer during a disturbance call.

On January 30, 2025, at approximately 10:06 AM, Odessa Police officers responded to a report of a man attempting to force entry into an apartment at 950 W. 31st St. Upon arrival, officers encountered Benjamin Fiedler, 32, who was armed with a hammer and refused to comply with commands.

Officers attempted to subdue Fiedler using a Taser, but it was ineffective. When Fiedler charged at officers, one officer fired a single shot, striking him in the abdomen.

Fiedler was transported to Medical Center Hospital by Odessa Fire and Rescue.

The Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation, as the case is classified as an officer-involved shooting. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave with pay, following standard procedure.
