Man Gets Automatic Life Sentence for Capital Murder in 2023 Odessa Shooting

Odessa, Texas – An Ector County jury in the 358th District Court found Jayven Landerth guilty of Capital Murder in connection with a 2023 shooting that left one person dead and four others wounded. A Capital Murder conviction in Texas carries an automatic Life Sentence in prison.
The incident occurred on June 29, 2023, when law enforcement responded to a reported shooting at the Carriage House Apartments in Odessa, Texas. A total of five people were shot, and one victim was pronounced deceased upon arrival at the hospital.
The investigation determined that Landerth, also known as “gocraazyjdot,” and the victims had met up for an illegal gun purchase, according to an arrest affidavit.
Surveillance video from the Carriage House Apartments showed three suspects, including Landerth, walk up to a vehicle occupied by four people around 9:32 p.m. at the time of the shooting.
Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke stated at the time of the incident that the shooting was not a random act. “This was a planned act, and I do believe that both parties were familiar with each other,” he said.
Landerth was one of three suspects charged in connection with the murder. The State will now proceed with its cases against the remaining defendants.
The work of the Odessa Police Department and the Ector County trial team was commended, including 1st Assistant District Attorney Greg Barber and Assistant District Attorney Angela Overman. The trial was presided over by Judge John Shrode of the 358th District Court.
