Man Charged with Manslaughter Two Years After Fatal Shooting of Bystander in Houston

On Monday, June 20, 2022, at approximately 9:02 p.m., Harris County Precinct 4 Deputies were dispatched to a Weapons Disturbance at an apartment complex located at 14230 Wunderlich Drive, Houston, Harris County, Texas. Upon arrival, deputies found evidence of a shooting but did not locate a victim.

While still on scene, deputies received a call about an unresponsive adult male arriving at a nearby Urgent Care by private vehicle. The male, later identified as Robert Mayes, 19, had sustained several gunshot wounds to the chest and was pronounced deceased upon arrival. Deputies linked Mayes’s shooting to the disturbance call at the apartment complex and learned that Mayes had been a bystander during a fight between Dylan Leblanc, 22, and another male.

Further investigation revealed that Leblanc discharged a firearm during the argument, unintentionally striking and fatally injuring Mayes.

On August 30, 2024, two years after the crime, HCSO Homicide investigators charged Leblanc with Manslaughter. He was arrested by the HCSO Criminal Warrants (VIPER) Division without incident.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide and Crime Scene Units continued their follow-up investigation. No motive for the shooting has been determined, and the investigation remains ongoing. Investigators urge anyone with information about this case to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
