League City Police Arrest Two in Infant Death Case
On Thursday, June 6, 2024, the League City Police Department’s Community Impact Unit (CIU) arrested Melody Hughes, 43, and Kirk White, 50, both of League City. Hughes was charged with Injury to a Child with a $100,000 bond, and White was charged with Endangering a Child with a $60,000 bond.
The incident dates back to Wednesday, December 27, 2023, when the League City Police Department received a call at approximately 7:29 a.m. regarding an unresponsive one-month-old infant in an apartment on the 2500 block of W Marina Bay Dr. Officers arrived at the scene at approximately 7:33 a.m. and began administering CPR. The League City Fire Department’s EMS personnel arrived shortly after and confirmed the infant’s death at 7:39 a.m.
A death investigation revealed that the infant had died while in bed between Hughes and White, who were sleeping at the time. Detectives noticed narcotics in plain view at the residence and obtained blood search warrants for both Hughes and White. The results of the blood tests, along with the infant’s toxicology report, were received during the investigation.
On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, detectives completed a thorough investigation and obtained felony arrest warrants for Hughes and White. The following day, CIU officers went to the couple’s residence. After receiving no response despite repeated announcements, officers forced entry through the front door and arrested Hughes and White without incident.
