According to HPD, officers were conducting a traffic stop around 8:40 a.m. in the 5000 block of Antoine Drive when they learned the driver was wanted on a felony warrant. As officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, the man fled in his vehicle, prompting a pursuit.

During the chase, police say the suspect fired a handgun at officers, striking a marked patrol vehicle. The pursuit ended near the intersection of Antoine Drive and West 34th Street when the suspect’s vehicle left the roadway and crashed into fixed objects. The suspect then exited the vehicle and ran from the scene on foot.

Officers searching the area later located the suspect in a parking lot at 5828 West 34th Street. Police say the suspect fired multiple shots at an officer, who returned fire. A second officer arrived moments later and also fired toward the suspect. The suspect was struck at least once.

Houston Fire Department paramedics transported the 33-year-old suspect to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. No officers were injured during the incident.

The officers involved, identified as HPD Officers R. Kloeppel and M. Spinks of the North Patrol Division, both discharged their duty weapons. Officer Kloeppel has been with HPD since January 2017, and Officer Spinks since September 2018.

As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the incident remains under investigation by the HPD Homicide Division, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
