HPD Investigating Fatal Shooting During Reported Home Burglary in West Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – Houston police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Saturday morning during a reported burglary at a residence on South Kirkwood Road, authorities said.
Officers responded around 12:15 a.m. to a burglary in progress at a home located at the 1200 block of South Kirkwood Road. As patrol officers arrived, they heard at least one gunshot coming from inside the residence. Officers detained a man armed with a firearm and discovered 62-year-old Pedro Cantu suffering from a gunshot wound.
Houston Fire Department paramedics transported Cantu to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Investigators also located another man inside the home with a superficial gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
According to Houston Police Department Homicide Division Detectives A. Rodriguez and M. Cater, the armed 35-year-old man and Cantu were residents of the home. Detectives determined that the injured male had allegedly broken into the residence. During an attempt to defend the home, the armed resident fired at the suspect, striking him and accidentally shooting Cantu.
Police identified the suspected intruder as Rodney Dushaw Yoder, 44. He was arrested and charged with burglary of a habitation in the 209th Criminal District Court.
