GALVESTON, Texas — A Galveston County jury has found a Houston woman guilty of capital murder in the death of her 17-month-old daughter, resulting in an automatic sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

On the morning of March 6, 2026, a jury convicted 32-year-old Channel Jasmine Yonko of the capital murder of her daughter, Hannah Yonko, following a week-long trial in the 212th Judicial District Court presided over by Judge Patricia Grady.

The case stems from an incident on October 23, 2024, when Galveston police responded to reports of a baby found in the street near 59th Street and Seawall Boulevard. Officers arrived to find the child suffering from a severe head wound and stab wounds to her back.

The child was transported by ambulance to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where she was pronounced deceased.

Investigators later determined the toddler had been thrown from a nearby hotel balcony. Officers initially could not locate a parent or caregiver at the scene but eventually identified Channel Yonko as the child’s mother, leading to her indictment for capital murder.

During the trial, prosecutors Casey Kirst and Michael D. Rinehart presented evidence showing Yonko had traveled to Galveston with her sister, her sister’s friend, and her daughter for about a week before the killing.

Testimony from a court-appointed psychiatrist revealed that Yonko admitted to stabbing Hannah three times in the back inside a nearby condominium, with one stab wound fracturing the child’s rib. Investigators also recovered a bloody pillow and towel from Yonko’s hotel room.

Prosecutors further presented evidence that safety features from Hannah’s car seat had been removed prior to the incident.

The following day, after a disagreement with her sister’s friend, Yonko and her sister checked into the Beach Front Palms Hotel. Surveillance footage presented during the trial showed Yonko pushing her daughter in a stroller through several floors of the hotel before taking an elevator to the top floor.

Jurors then watched video showing Yonko remove Hannah from the stroller, wrap her in two blankets, and throw her over the balcony. Additional footage captured the child falling four stories to the pavement below.

During closing arguments, Yonko’s defense attorney acknowledged she threw the child from the balcony but argued she was legally insane at the time and did not understand the difference between right and wrong.

Prosecutors countered the insanity defense with surveillance video, text messages, witness testimony, and expert evidence. Investigators showed that Yonko fled the scene, attempted to hide evidence, and tried to order an Uber to leave Galveston within minutes of the killing, actions prosecutors argued demonstrated she understood what she had done.

The jury deliberated less than one hour before returning a guilty verdict.

Because the conviction was for capital murder, Yonko received a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The Galveston County Criminal District Attorney’s Office credited numerous agencies for their work on the case, including the Galveston Police Department, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Houston Crime Lab, Galveston EMS, Child Protective Services, and the medical examiner’s office.
