Houston ISD and Chevron Launch Partnership to Advance Maritime Studies and Career Education

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) has announced a new partnership with Chevron Shipping Company LLC to elevate Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, particularly focusing on maritime studies at Austin High School. This program, part of the Port of Houston Partnership in Maritime Education, will offer students access to simulation equipment, professional certifications, and skill-building for high-paying maritime careers. Chevron’s involvement includes guest lectures, mentorship, and workforce development opportunities to guide students in this field.

“Career and Technical Education is essential for preparing our students for high-skill jobs that shape our workforce’s future,” said Superintendent Mike Miles. “By aligning our CTE programs with industry needs, we’re opening a pathway to rewarding careers in areas like maritime and shipping.”

At a launch event held at Austin High School, Chevron and Port of Houston representatives joined Superintendent Miles to inaugurate the partnership. Barbara Pickering, president of Chevron Shipping Company, expressed the importance of the initiative, highlighting the need for skilled professionals in the maritime sector.

This partnership is part of HISD’s broader Destination 2035 initiative to provide students with hands-on experience and career readiness, setting a precedent for future collaborations with industry leaders across various sectors.
