High-Speed Chase Ends in Arrest of Teen on I-69 in Brownsville
On Monday, April 22, 2024, Cameron County Sheriff Deputies witnessed a dangerous incident on I-69 southbound in Brownsville, Texas. At approximately 00:15hrs, deputies observed two vehicles, a black Chevrolet Camaro and a White Dodge Charger, racing with their lights turned off near Anacua Street.
When deputies tried to pull over the Dodge Charger, it ignored the emergency lights and continued speeding southbound, endangering other drivers on the highway. The Charger eventually exited onto Boca Chica exit, where it crashed into a palm tree. The driver and passenger fled on foot but were apprehended after a short chase.
The driver, identified as 18-year-old Angel Gabriel Martinez, was arrested and taken to the Carrizales Rucker Detention Center. Martinez faces several charges, including evading arrest with a vehicle and on foot, racing on a highway, reckless driving, and duty on striking a fixture on the highway.
The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Brownsville Police Department, and the Florida State Highway Patrol for their assistance in ensuring public safety during the apprehension of Martinez.
