Grandson Charged with Murder of Grandmother in Big Spring

On Tuesday, the Big Spring Police Department announced that a man has been charged with the murder of his grandmother, Leah Hughes, on Dec. 27. Leah Hughes, 67, was found deceased at her residence in the 1800 block of Brent Dr. Initially believed to be a result of a fall, an autopsy later revealed she died from a gunshot wound.

Following this revelation, Big Spring officers obtained a search warrant for the Hughes residence and began an investigation. After several weeks of collaborative efforts with multiple agencies, 26-year-old Colten Hughes, Leah Hughes’s grandson, was arrested and charged with murder.

Colten Hughes was apprehended without incident during a traffic stop at the intersection of Parkview Dr. and Durango Dr. in Trophy Club, TX, approximately four hours away from Big Spring. The Trophy Club Police Department assisted in executing the arrest warrant.

Hughes is jailed in the Howard County Jail on a $2 million bond.
