Governor Abbott Commends State Board of Education for Passage of Bluebonnet Learning Materials
Governor Greg Abbott today issued a statement praising the State Board of Education’s (SBOE) approval of the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) Bluebonnet Learning instructional materials for reading and math.
“The passage of Bluebonnet Learning is a critical step forward to bring students back to the basics of education and provide the best education in the nation,” said Governor Abbott. “These transformative educational materials are voluntary and free for schools and teachers to use. Parents will also be able to access these materials online, ensuring young Texans have access to high-quality, grade-level appropriate curricula that will strengthen their foundation in core subjects.”
The Bluebonnet Learning materials will be available online at no cost to schools, teachers, and families. School districts that choose to adopt the SBOE-approved materials will receive additional state funding, with a second stream of funding available to help with printing costs.
Bluebonnet Learning is in line with House Bill 1605, signed into law by Governor Abbott in 2023. The law requires TEA to provide Open Educational Resource textbooks for core subjects such as reading and math for Pre-K through 8th grade. An advisory board has been established to ensure the materials meet high-quality standards and are suitable for Texas students.
Governor Abbott commended the Texas Education Agency for its efforts to support students and families, stating that the Bluebonnet Learning materials will enhance educational outcomes across Texas.
