Former Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) correctional officer Jonatan Mojica has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being caught attempting to smuggle over 200 grams of methamphetamine and multiple cellular telephones into the Clements Unit in Brazoria County in July 2021.

An investigation by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) revealed that Mojica had received thousands of dollars from inmates and their accomplices for prior contraband deliveries before his apprehension. Cell phones matching packaging found in Mojica’s vehicle were discovered in the possession of inmates at the Clements Unit, in addition to the methamphetamine recovered directly from Mojica. Following the incident, Mojica was terminated from TDCJ, and criminal charges were filed.

The TDCJ expressed its gratitude to the OIG and the Special Prosecution Unit for their efforts in the arrest and conviction of individuals smuggling contraband into correctional facilities.

Eric Quisenberry of the Special Prosecution Unit commented, “The work of a correctional officer is dangerous, difficult, and often thankless, but a vital service to our state and the public safety. Anyone who betrays the trust of our society by using their position in our prison system to traffic in drugs and contraband insults the honorable men and women working every day in corrections and must be held accountable for their selfish and harmful actions.”
