Fatal Shooting of Woman in Houston’s Northside to Be Referred to Harris County Grand Jury

HOUSTON, Texas – The fatal shooting of a woman at 6200 West Tidwell Road on January 16 will be referred to a Harris County Grand Jury, according to Houston police.

The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Shyta Campbell.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives H. Montealegre and G. Rangel reported that officers responded to a shooting at an apartment complex at approximately 7:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Campbell suffering from a gunshot wound near the entrance of an apartment. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Witnesses told investigators there had been an altercation between the apartment resident and multiple individuals outside the unit. The individuals reportedly approached the apartment door and began arguing with the resident. During the confrontation, a firearm was produced and Campbell was struck.

After the initial shot was fired, multiple individuals began firing toward the apartment, striking several units that were occupied at the time. All suspects fled the scene.

Through further investigation, authorities identified the individuals involved. After consultation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, it was determined the case would be presented to a Harris County Grand Jury.

Three individuals were arrested as part of the investigation. James Edward King, 37, is charged with burglary with intent to commit a felony in the 178th Criminal District Court. Shawn Jones, 54, is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon in the 184th Criminal District Court. A 15-year-old male was referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation authorities on a charge of deadly conduct.

The investigation remains ongoing.
