The Austin Police Department (APD) has released an update following significant protest activity on June 9, 2025, that began at the closed Texas Capitol and moved through downtown Austin. APD worked in coordination with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to manage the protest and maintain public safety.

The protest began peacefully but escalated when individuals defaced property at the JJ Pickle Federal Building. Officers issued dispersal orders, and two individuals were arrested for criminal mischief. Tensions rose as agitators threw rocks at officers, resulting in injuries to four APD personnel. One officer was spit on in the eye, and another sustained a shoulder injury during an arrest.

To manage the crowd, APD deployed pepperball rounds toward the ground while DPS released gas to disperse individuals from the area. Protesters splintered into smaller groups, some of whom threw scooters and barricades into streets. Officers contained the activity near 7th Street and Congress Avenue. The crowd eventually dispersed.

APD arrested the following individuals for alleged unlawful actions:

  • Conor Williams – Criminal Mischief
  • Abigail Pore – Criminal Mischief
  • Alexandra Haddix – Failure to Obey a Lawful Order
  • Cody Bates – Harassment of a Public Servant
  • Edgar Tovar – Reckless Driving
  • Shaneal Harun – Riot, Resisting Arrest
  • Margarito Perez Montalvo – Interference with Public Duties, Resisting Arrest
  • Hayden Perez – Failure to Obey a Lawful Order, Harassment of a Public Servant

All injured officers have since been released from the hospital.

APD is preparing for potential future demonstrations and has increased officer presence throughout the city.
