Five Arrested, Tear Gas Deployed During Protest at Texas Capitol

On the evening of Monday, June 9, 2025, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), in coordination with the Austin Police Department (APD), responded to a planned protest near the Texas State Capitol that resulted in multiple arrests and the use of crowd control measures.
The protest began around 7:00 p.m. in the Capitol Complex, a 46-block area in downtown Austin protected by DPS. During the demonstration, five individuals were arrested by DPS on various charges including felony criminal mischief, resisting arrest, assault, and public intoxication.
The individuals arrested and booked into the Travis County Jail are:
- Alvin Jarret Talley, 23 – felony criminal mischief, resisting arrest
- Hiram Gilberto Garcia, 27 – resisting arrest
- Zakk Wylde Bonham, 22 – felony criminal mischief, resisting arrest
- Luis Davila, 21 – felony criminal mischief
- William Haraway, 50 – assault by contact, public intoxication
To maintain order and ensure officer safety, DPS deployed tear gas and pepper ball projectiles during the response.
The agency emphasized its ongoing coordination with local, state, and federal partners and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and the protection of state property while upholding individuals’ constitutional rights.
Eight additional arrests were made by Austin Police during the same event.
