Alma Alicia Zavala

A suspect has been arrested following a fatal crash on Wednesday evening at 600 East Loop South (East Interstate Highway 610 South). Alma Alicia Zavala, 32, is facing charges of failure to stop and render aid in the 209th State District Court.

The identity of the deceased male, aged 35, is awaiting confirmation by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The incident occurred when an adult male and female were walking on the shoulder of the freeway. A silver Mazda CX5 veered into the shoulder, striking the male pedestrian. The female companion escaped unharmed. The driver fled the scene but was stopped by several witnesses nearby.

Upon the arrival of HPD patrol officers, the female driver, later identified as Zavala, was detained. Despite no signs of intoxication, she was taken into custody. Houston Fire Department paramedics rushed the injured male to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Following the incident, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office was informed, and Zavala was subsequently charged in connection with the crash.
