Driver Arrested After Bypassing Checkpoint and Leading Authorities on High-Speed Chase in Brewster County
On Monday morning, December 23, U.S. Border Patrol agents requested assistance after a vehicle bypassed a checkpoint south of Marathon. Brewster County deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, which fled north on Highway 385, reaching speeds exceeding 110 miles per hour during a pursuit that lasted for more than 40 miles.
Additional units from the Pecos County Sheriff’s Office deployed Stop Sticks to disable the vehicle, bringing it to a stop. Several individuals, including the driver, fled on foot. Brewster County deputies apprehended the driver, identified as Luis Padilla-Canales.
Padilla-Canales, 27, was charged with evading arrest with a vehicle, a third-degree felony, and evading arrest on foot, a Class A misdemeanor.
Border Patrol agents apprehended one additional occupant, an illegal alien from Mexico, while other suspects remain at large. Further charges related to the smuggling of persons are pending for Padilla-Canales.
