Copperas Cove Officer Killed in Line of Duty; Texas Rangers Investigating

COPPERAS COVE, Texas – The Copperas Cove Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Elijah Garretson, who was killed in the line of duty Saturday, January 10, 2026.
Police confirmed Officer Garretson, badge number 118, died following an officer-involved shooting that occurred at the intersection of Great Hills Drive and Lost Trail. The Texas Rangers have been requested to lead the investigation, which is standard procedure in incidents involving an officer’s death.
According to police, the suspect involved in the shooting was later located and barricaded himself. After a lengthy negotiation attempt with law enforcement, the suspect took his own life. The suspect’s identity has not been released.
Officer Garretson had recently begun his law enforcement career, having graduated from the police academy in June 2025.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the line of duty death of Officer Elijah Garretson,” the Copperas Cove Police Department said in a statement. “As we begin to navigate this incredibly difficult time, we ask for understanding and patience as our department, Officer Garretson’s family, and our law enforcement family grieve this tremendous loss.”
Officials said no additional details will be released at this time out of respect for Officer Garretson’s family and due to the ongoing investigation.
The department asked community members to keep Officer Garretson’s loved ones and fellow officers in their thoughts and prayers as they grieve the loss of one of their own.
